Protein Intake and Kidney Health

Protein and Your Kidneys: Micro-Entry

All substance, no fluff.

Overview
When a healthy (no renal dysfunction) resistance-training population is considered, meta analyses indicate that high protein intakes do not adversely influence kidney function on GFR.

Additionally, increased protein intake has little or no effect on blood markers of kidney function.

Research
An association of protein intake with long-term kidney function decline was absent in the general population and/or persons with normal kidney function.

Our analysis indicates that high protein intakes do not adversely influence kidney function on GFR in healthy adults.

These data further indicate that, at least in the short term (6 months), higher protein intake within the range of recommended intakes for protein is consistent with normal kidney function in healthy individuals.

To conclude, it appears that protein intake under 2. 8 g.kg does not impair renal function in well-trained athletes as indicated by the measures of renal function used in this study.
